After close inspection, the initial theory that Iqbal was mentally unstable and a vagabond was disproved, said a CID official

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) said Iqbal Hossain, the prime accused in a case filed over hurting religious sentiments in Comilla, is neither mentally unstable nor a vagabond.

In fact, Iqbal, who is currently in CID custody, has already provided investigators with important information vital to the case, confirmed Special Superintendent of Police (SP) Khan Mohammad Rezwan on Monday.

SP Rezwan said after close inspection, the initial theory that Iqbal was mentally unstable and a vagabond had been disproved.

“After instigating violence at the Nanuardighi puja pavilion, he was mentally sound enough to discreetly escape the scene and flee to Cox's Bazar,”

the CID official added.

Meanwhile, police on Monday arrested Sajjad Hossain Shimul and his brother Faisal Mobin Palash for using their news portal “Comilla Times” to allegedly incite communal violence following the Nanuardighi incident.

Earlier Iqbal, who had been on the run since the incident but was later arrested from Cox’s Bazar, confessed to placing the Quran at the puja pavilion at the city’s Nanuardighi.

On the morning of October 13, a 999 call to police reported that a copy of the Quran had been  found on an idol at a puja venue at Nanaurdighi.

Locals said they found a copy of the Quran on the lap of the Hanuman idol, but a club attached to the idol was missing.

Several temples and puja venues in the city came under attack in the afternoon as tension mounted over allegations of sacrilege.

The violence later spread across Bangladesh, leaving at least seven dead and many Hindu houses and businesses vandalized.
